Data Analytics Explained

16 August 2026 · 6 min read

Data analytics has become one of the most searched career paths in Nigeria, and one of the most misunderstood. It is not primarily about machine learning. It is about turning messy records into answers a manager can act on.

What a data analyst does

A working day usually contains some mix of:

  • Collecting data from systems, spreadsheets or databases
  • Cleaning it — fixing duplicates, gaps and inconsistent entries
  • Analysing it to find patterns, trends and outliers
  • Building reports and dashboards people actually read
  • Explaining what the numbers mean and what to do next

Is data analytics difficult?

The tools are learnable. The harder part is judgement: asking the right question, noticing when data looks wrong, and resisting a conclusion the numbers do not support.

If you are comfortable being precise and sceptical, the technical side follows with practice.

The Excel skills that matter

Excel is still where most Nigerian analytics work begins, and strong Excel alone will get you interviews:

  • Lookup functions and structured references
  • PivotTables and summarising large sheets
  • Data cleaning: text functions, removing duplicates, validation
  • Conditional logic and error handling
  • Charts that communicate rather than decorate

What to learn after Excel

SQL, to query data directly rather than waiting for an export. A visualisation tool such as Power BI. Then, if your work needs it, a scripting language for repeatable analysis.

How to become a data analyst

Learn the fundamentals through structured training, then build two or three real analyses on data you care about and write up what you found. A small portfolio of clear, honest analysis beats a long list of course certificates.

GITNG runs data analytics training in Port Harcourt and online, built around real datasets.
