What Is AWS? A Beginner's Guide to Cloud Computing

12 August 2026 · 6 min read

AWS comes up in almost every conversation about modernising business technology. Strip away the jargon and the idea is straightforward: instead of buying and housing your own servers, you rent computing capacity and pay for what you use.

What cloud computing means

Cloud computing is using someone else's data centre over the internet. The servers, storage, cooling, power and physical security are their responsibility; the systems you run on them are yours.

AWS — Amazon Web Services — is the largest of these providers, offering hundreds of individual services from simple file storage to full database platforms.

The services most businesses start with

You do not need hundreds. Most organisations begin with a handful:

  • Compute: virtual servers that run your applications
  • Storage: durable file and backup storage
  • Databases: managed databases without server maintenance
  • Networking: private networks and controlled access
  • Backup and recovery, so a failure is not a crisis

Why it appeals to Nigerian businesses

Two reasons dominate. First, resilience: power and hardware failures hurt less when your systems are not sitting in one office cupboard. Second, cost shape — you pay monthly for what you use instead of buying equipment upfront and replacing it every few years.

It also makes remote and multi-site work far easier to support, which matters for organisations with offshore or field operations.

What people get wrong

Cloud is not automatically cheaper. Poorly sized or forgotten resources waste money quickly, and an unplanned migration can cost more than it saves.

The organisations that benefit most start with a review of what they run today, then move workloads deliberately, one at a time.

Where to start

Begin with an inventory: what systems you run, what they depend on, what downtime would cost. That single document determines whether cloud is a saving or an expensive experiment.

GITNG provides AWS and cloud solutions for Nigerian organisations, from readiness review to migration and ongoing support.
