How to Start an IT Support Career in Nigeria

4 August 2026 · 5 min read

If you want a technology career and you are not sure where to begin, IT support is the honest answer. It is the role with the most openings, the shortest route in, and the widest set of exits into other specialisms.

What the job involves

Helping people whose technology has stopped cooperating: accounts, printers, laptops, email, connectivity, software. Some of it is remote, some at the desk, some in the server room.

It teaches you how an organisation really runs, which is why so many engineers, analysts and security professionals started here.

Skills to build first

  • Windows troubleshooting and account management
  • Computer hardware: components, replacement, diagnostics
  • Basic networking — connectivity, addressing, Wi-Fi issues
  • Printers, peripherals and business devices such as POS machines
  • Calm, clear communication with frustrated users

Certification that helps

CompTIA A+ is the standard starting qualification because it maps almost exactly to the work: hardware, operating systems, troubleshooting and support procedure.

It signals to an employer that you will not need training on the basics from day one.

Getting your first role

Fix things visibly. Repair machines for people, document what you did, and be able to describe three faults you diagnosed from symptom to cause.

Small businesses, schools, hotels, cybercafés and IT service companies hire beginners far more readily than large corporates, and the experience counts the same.

Where it leads

Within a few years support staff commonly move into network engineering, systems or server administration, cloud, cybersecurity or IT management. The support years are what make those moves credible.

GITNG's CompTIA A+ programme covers hardware, support and troubleshooting from the ground up.
