Cybersecurity attracts a lot of interest in Nigeria, and for good reason: the work is needed, the pay is competitive and the field keeps growing. It also attracts a lot of poor advice. This guide sets out what the job involves and how people actually get in.
What cybersecurity work actually is
Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting systems, networks and information from misuse — whether that comes from criminals, careless staff or badly configured technology.
In practice it means monitoring for suspicious activity, hardening systems before they are attacked, responding when something goes wrong, and helping ordinary staff work safely.
The foundations you cannot skip
You cannot defend a system you do not understand. Before security tools, learn the ground underneath them:
- How computers and operating systems work, especially Windows and Linux
- Networking fundamentals: addressing, routing, ports, firewalls
- How identity and access control work — accounts, permissions, passwords
- Basic scripting, enough to automate repetitive checks
A realistic route in
Most Nigerian security professionals arrive from IT support or networking rather than straight from school. That path works because it builds the instinct for what normal looks like.
A workable sequence: build IT fundamentals, add networking knowledge, take structured cybersecurity training, then target a junior security or monitoring role.
Is it a good career here?
Yes, with a caveat. Nigerian banks, fintechs, telecoms, oil and gas operators and government agencies all need security capability, and demand exceeds supply for people with real skills.
The caveat is that entry-level security roles are fewer than entry-level support roles. Expect to prove yourself in an adjacent role first.
Skills employers ask about
Security awareness and risk thinking, threat and vulnerability basics, incident response steps, log analysis, and the discipline to document what you found. Communication matters more than beginners expect — much of the job is persuading people to change how they work.
